Skill Exchange is a community-based workshop series which aims to inspire the community to use their hands, and learn new and traditional hand making skills in a fun, social setting. As handcrafting skills are too often undervalued and under practiced– Skill Exchange seeks to encourage self-reliance through social skill exchange by bringing together enthusiastic makers and teachers to share their passion and craft with our communities.  Skill Exchange was developed in part while writing my  MFA Design thesis  at CCA on self-reliance and communal skill exchange. I developed a practical methodology to encourage productive chain reactions in self-reliance.

Skill Exchange 3-day Pop-up at StoreFrontLab September 7-9th 2012
A 3-day social craft experience in the fall of September 2012, this pop-up workshop series featured demonstrations, conversations and tastings to teach, share and learn self-reliance skills. These low-cost workshops with Bay area chefs, artisans and entrepreneurs focused on urban farming, seasonal cooking, building, mending and making. Generous support provided by StoreFrontLab, Hello! 		<description>There is value in everyday production, in building what one needs with two hands. 

My thesis explores the environmental, social and economic impact of the devaluation of self-reliance. This work is a methodology to instigate productive chain reactions in self-reliance through communal skill exchange. In order for these chain reactions to have a productive impact, a paradigm shift  must occur within our existing communities. By creating playful skill-sharing experiences, I hope to encourage this transformative shift through the revaluation of self-reliance skills. A renewed sense of self-reliance through hand-making, can potentially re-connect communities and lead to a new form of sustainable craft activism.
