Teach, Share, Learn, Make (&#38; Eat) Fall 2011 - 2012

The concept for this workshop series was created after writing my MFA thesis on design and communal skill exchange. I developed a practical methodology for encouraging productive chain reactions in self-reliance. I coordinate the series, as well as design posters and promotional material for this workshop series. This workshop series began in August of 2011, as a way to encourage sharing through free skill exchange workshops. This workshop series is currently ongoing, check out eventbrite for ticket information.

In collaboration and hosted by kitchen boutique Pot + Pantry, workshops are lead by Bay Area makers, including Sightglass Coffee, Urban Veggie Starts, INNA Jam, Almanac Beer, Sidesaddle Kitchen, Pastoral Plate, Revival Bar + Kitchen and more. The goal of these free workshop is to inspire our community to use their hands, and learn new kitchen skills in a fun, social setting.

Make Mend Spring 2011
Make Mend was an experimental skill-sharing workshop I created as part of my MFA
thesis. This free event was held at CCA as an opportunity to teach, share and learn simple mending and sewing skills. The goal of this event was to take time and make time, and to encourage self-reliance through hand making.

<description> Wider White Space with Jon Sueda, Spring 2011
This class was an extension of the Wide White Space exhibition at The Wattis, curated by Jon Sueda. Undergraduate Graphic Design and Graduate Design students worked collaboratively in small groups to create small exhibitions showcasing the work of graphic design studios. I worked with Zach Gibson and Lydia Ortiz to curate a video installation based on the work of Experimental Jetset, April 14 through April 23 2011.

Our curatorial statement:
Experimental Jetset is a graphic design collective based in Amsterdam that is made up
of three people: Marieke Stolk, Danny van den Dungen and Erwin Brinkers.
Experimental Jetset is Marieke, Danny and Erwin, but it is also Danny, Marieke and Erwin, and of course, Erwin, Danny and Marieke. They have collaborated since 1997.
The Making of… is a video exhibition exploring the playful, often talked about, sometimes secretive, mystique that surrounds the collaborative work-style of Experimental Jetset. The videos, shot with three cameras, by three design students, shown on three monitors, explores the three individuals behind the work, their personae, their approaches, and their quirks.
Experimental Jetset describes their work as transforming language into objects. This exhibition recontextualizes the graphic design objects of Experimental Jetset, and turns the objects back to language, and the language into objects on film.
Like Experimental Jetset, this exhibition may, or may not be a paradox. Graphic design as language and as object. This is graphic design in the context of an exhibition, under glass, and on film.

This is The Making of Experimental Jetset.

Identity and Anonymous Space Studio 2010
This installation project explored color and play on Duncan Street September - December.
What began as anonymous color flags on the street grew into a collection of flags visually uniting neighbors on the 100-600 blocks on Duncan Street. With an invitation to participate, neighbors began to get involved in the project by hanging the flags on their houses, and sharing their stories and ideas about the neighborhood. The project started as a way to add color to Duncan Street, but slowly become a way to connect neighbors, and encourage neighborly behavior to make our street feel less anonymous, and a little more colorful.

Contemporary Issues with Karen Fiss, Spring 2010
This handmade constitution is composed of 32 fabric pages bound together with red thread and a variety of stitching techniques. Each page is fraying and unraveling at various points and rates, to represent the nature of the current California constitution. The binding itself is weak and loose, so the reader may feel in his or her hands the delicacy of the document that is supposed to be the legal guide of the California government, and protect the rights of all Californians. The fragile handmade nature of this constitution is in opposition to the strength and power that any other US constitution conveys.

		<description>The Real Curriculum Vitae Project

I developed a collaborative project to engage in a conversation about our personal definitions
of self-reliance. The Real Curriculum Vitae Project is a new attempt to capture and revalue
our hard-earned self-reliance and hand making skills. I designed and letterpressed
a small edition of blind stamped CVs.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24481/1347018/cv.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24481/1347018/cv_o.jpg" data-mid="10988684"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
I sent copies to inspiring makers, who filled out the CV, and returned a copy to me.
These CVs are the personal histories of self-taught makers, cataloging with wit and
intelligence the work that has gone in to cultivating self-reliance in Seattle, Oxford,
Angouleme, Portland, Redmond, San Francisco, Woodland, and Asheville. These
makers aren’t alone in their efforts, and have found ways surround themselves with other
like-minded makers. Many are opting for a different path than their peers and parents,
for one that is life-serving, rather than career-serving.

		<description>Embroidery 2010
The following pieces are a combination of commissioned work and typography experiments, and all are made entirely from recycled materials. Each piece is hand embroidered on reclaimed fabric and framed with thrifted wood hoops.

<description>The resurgence of craft and the DIY movement is confirmation that many of us long for a unique object among the mass-produced. In our technology-fueled lives, there is a lingering desire to produce and create our own life-sustaining goods. The urge to create, make, build, and mend is confirmation of our need to think with our hands, and to unite thinking and making with making and doing. It is in this production of the everyday that we can rebuild our quality of life and encourage self-reliance.

This book is an exploration of design as a social practice, and explores my methodology to instigate productive chain reactions in self-reliance through communal skill exchange.

<description>There is value in everyday production, in building what one needs with two hands.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24481/1604194/P5109082.JPG" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24481/1604194/P5109082_o.JPG" data-mid="7858028"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
My thesis explores the environmental, social and economic impact of the devaluation of self-reliance. This work is a methodology to instigate productive chain reactions in self-reliance through communal skill exchange. In order for these chain reactions to have a productive impact, a paradigm shift must occur within our existing communities. By creating playful skill-sharing experiences, I hope to encourage this transformative shift through the revaluation of self-reliance skills. A renewed sense of self-reliance through hand-making, can potentially re-connect communities and lead to a new form of sustainable craft activism.
